Yummiest Ice Cream Flavor!

I always order the same thing when I go out to eat.  Ice cream is a different thing all together.  I love to mix up my mixin's when we go for a treat to Marble Slab.  Today's treat - sweet cream with coconut.  Yummmm.  The only thing that would have been better - a chocolate dipped waffle cone.

Don't Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

I first read this poem in high school.  It really made an impact on me.  My life has not been an easy one.  I've made mistakes, people in my life have made mistakes.  Whether it was from bad choices or just design, there have been many times when I just wanted to give up.  I think of this poem and I tell myself you can't quit.  No one is going to make it better for you.  You have to do it yourself.

Communication

Good Communication

"Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath..."
James 1:19

I pretty much do the opposite of this most of the time.  I usually half listen, interrupt to give my opinion and then try to prove my point when I don't really understand what the conversation is really intended to be about.

I would be much better at being 'swift to hear' if I practiced better listening skills.  Often I get distracted while someone is talking to me and I start preparing what I am going to say instead of really listening and focusing on their words.  I need to train myself to shift my attention back to the person talking when that happens.  If I need something that I don't understand clarified I should repeat what I have heard in my own words and ask them if I understand them correctly.  Lean forward, nod, don't interrupt and try to be non-judgmental.

I am pretty quick to talk.  I have a tendency to respond quickly.  Some comments need to be well thought out.  I know I have said plenty of things that I wish I could take back.  I need to learn to stop, take a breath while I think of my response.
"Let your speech always be with grace..."
Colossians 4:6

Slow to wrath - yeah, I do the opposite of that a lot.  I take things personally pretty frequently.
"A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger"
Proverbs 15:1

So many arguments could be avoided if everyone in my family practiced better communication.
Definitely something we all need to work on :)

The Clute Bears First NFL Season!!

Mr. H2 really enjoys football.  I am not a huge fan, but I think I would enjoy it more if I understood it.  So I have come up with this idea to learn about football by having a family fantasy football season.  Everyone is going to pick a team name, design a logo with their mascot, choose colors and pick a small town in Texas to be from.  Here is mine...
I just need to color it in!  We are starting the draft process tomorrow night.  It should be fun and everyone seems excited!

A Really, Really Bad Day

Today was a really bad day.  My chihuahua, Brisby, is no longer with us.  I don't want to go into the details of the accident.  I'm going to miss her terribly.  She was such a sweet little pumpkin.

Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon, The Lighthouse Trail

I have never seen colors so beautiful.  We started early to beat the heat.  We were probably at the trail head at about 7:30 am.

It was the best decision.  There was hardly anybody else on the trail that early.  We only saw one other group of hikers.
The morning light was great for photos.

The girls and I kept going up a bit, but Mr. decided to rest a bit and enjoy the sights.

This was my favorite part of our summer vacation.  Palo Duro was absolutely beautiful.  I was so amazed at how you can be driving through the panhandle plains and there is just nothing but flat land and dust storms and then all of the sudden there is this huge canyon.  The first glimpse is breathtaking.  The girls reaction was great - 'we're going to hike there?'  I think they really enjoyed it.
I loved waking up in the morning and seeing the view from the tent!

Wichita Falls, Texas

On our road trip we stopped in Wichita Falls to go to Lucy Park.  The city was named after the natural falls located on the Wichita River originally, but they were destroyed in a flood in 1886.  The city built their own namesake and did a wonderful job.  The falls are located after a short hike on a paved surface.  It is a beautiful setting for photos!  We got there between 12:00 and 1:00 pm, which is not the best time to take photos, but we were there and they turned out okay.  They had a little duck pond and we enjoyed feeding the ducks as we stretched our legs :)

This duck was named Einstein by my girls.

Ft. Worth Historic Stockyards

After the Pioneer Plaza we cruised on over to the Stockyards in Ft. Worth.  OD got a bit sick so we didn't get to check it out as much as I would have liked.  The first time I went I was with my mom and my YD along with my niece and nephew.  It was during the summer and my mother can't stand the heat so that was a short lived stop too - what can ya do?  Next time I want to make it down to more of the shops and the BBQ place on the corner!
Chris Ledoux's star!

Standing beneath the light of the Neon Moon.

She looks pretty guilty!

She looks like she would do it again!

I think this one was framed...

Longhorn pictures that you can take with your own camera are only $5.00

Look at those horns!
I missed getting photos of the cattle drive, but that is a lot of fun to see.  It's probably the most tame cattle drive that you will ever see, but since we don't get too many opportunities to see real live cattle drives it is definitely Worth it :)
